| Every site should adopt a no-feeding policy for Canada geese to participate in the egg-oiling program. This is a requirement of the permit issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service. It also makes a lot of sense. Geese come to a site for two reasons. First, the lake/pond provides them with safety. They can easily escape land predators. Secondly, they like the grass planted and kept short for them by frequent mowing.
Artificial feeding of the geese will exacerbate the problem. GeesePeace is developing

and informational materials that will be helpful to inform people why they should not feed the geese or ducks. Feeding ducks and other waterfowl provides food for geese. During harsh winters some people believe that they need to throw out large amounts of corn or other feed for the geese especially when the ground is covered with snow. Geese have plenty of resources to find food for the winter. One way is to fly to warmer areas. They should not be encouraged to stay, where they will naturally find warmer feeding grounds. |
